I head over to Kings Lumber Yard climb up on a pile of wood and
wait for the rain. clouds move slowly covering what little sunshine
that seems to be on the rise; but as a kid with skinned knees
I carry hope in my jean pocket rather than a rabbits foot
my friend Janey sits under a blue and white rust savaged steel awning
knotting a new daisy chain crown; an offering to Mother Nature
ignoring all of her gifts, her perfections and all of her flaws
her hands are quick; knot, knot, loop – daisy, knot, knot, loop
rain clouds open and I climb higher thinking maybe if I can reach up and
tug on her hem she will give me a second and see the glint in my eye
see the inspiration she has stirred up in my kid-soul. I’m still in awe
of her grandiose presence, especially as the fog settles all around me
my sneaker gets wedged between two boards, with a hard yank slips
off my foot and drops like a stone into the abyss of a mountain of wood
that has the smell of a freshly cut lumberjack’s spoil. looking up into the sky
I think about Janey, her daisy chains; oblivious to the rain and rolling fog
